Preserving Manson’s dark skies starts at home. By choosing dark-sky friendly lighting, we can reduce light pollution, support local ecosystems, and keep the stars shining bright over the valley.

Artificial light at night does more than brighten the sky, it disrupts the natural rhythms wildlife and ecosystems rely on to survive. From altered migration patterns to impacts on nocturnal species and shoreline habitats, light pollution quietly affects the balance of the environment that makes places like Manson so unique.

Brighter doesn’t always mean safer. Dark-sky friendly lighting helps reduce glare and shadows, improves visibility, and supports a safer community—while still protecting Manson’s night sky.

Most of us are familiar with air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution, but did you know that light can also be a pollutant?

Many of us have experienced it: a neighbor installs a new, super bright light—and suddenly it’s spilling into your yard (or your bedroom window). Here’s how to approach the conversation kindly and actually get results.

Properties within the Manson Urban Growth Area are required to use exterior lighting that is fully shielded, downward-facing, and positioned to prevent light from spilling onto neighboring properties. These regulations exist to reduce glare, limit light trespass, and protect the natural nighttime environment that makes Manson unique.
