WHY DARK SKIES MATTER IN MANSON
Our Mission: Protect, inspire, preserve, and support Dark Skys in the Manson area.
Manson’s rural setting and lakefront environment make dark sky preservation especially important. Our community is surrounded by sensitive ecosystems where excessive artificial lighting can disrupt natural rhythms that wildlife rely on for survival. From nocturnal animals to migratory birds, maintaining natural darkness plays a critical role in protecting biodiversity in the Manson area.
Light pollution also impacts Lake Chelan and its surrounding shoreline, where artificial lighting can affect water quality, wildlife behavior, and overall ecosystem health. Dark skies support outdoor recreation such as stargazing, boating, camping, and night photography, all of which contribute to Manson’s cultural and economic vitality. Preserving the night sky helps maintain the character of our community while promoting responsible growth that respects the natural environment.
HOW DO WE CREATE DARK SKIES
Practical guidance, shared knowledge, and partnerships that make a difference.
The Manson Dark Sky Initiative promotes dark-sky-friendly lighting through public education, community partnerships, and accessible resources. Our goal is to help residents and businesses make informed lighting choices that protect wildlife, reduce light pollution, and preserve night sky visibility in the Lake Chelan Valley. Getting involved is simple and impactful.
